Travelpro Maxlite 5 Tote

Why it is our Best Overall

Pair-your-bags travelers are the audience for the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Tote. If you already roll a carry-on and want a personal item that rides on top of it, holds a laptop and your flight essentials, and slips under the seat without a fight, this is the tote built for that routine. Flight crews have carried Travelpro for decades, and the Maxlite line is the lightweight branch of that lineage.

It earns the Best Overall slot because it does the basics better than fashion totes and costs far less than designer options. The fabric is light but coated to resist water, the shape holds itself open so you can see inside, and the exterior pockets are placed where you reach for a phone or passport. The rear trolley sleeve is the feature that sells it: slide it over your spinner handle and the two bags move as one. A padded interior sleeve takes a tablet or small laptop, and the shoulder strap adjusts for carrying it alone.

On a real flight day, you clip it to your rolling bag, pull it off at security to show the laptop, then slide it under the seat where the soft sides give way to the floor rails. In flight, the top opening lets you grab headphones without unzipping anything. On arrival it doubles as a day bag.

The honest drawback: it is a tote, not a backpack, so a heavy load pulls on one shoulder on a long walk, and the light fabric is not built for rough handling. Travelers who carry a heavy laptop and a camera should look at the Osprey or a structured bag. For spinner-plus-tote travelers who want light and simple, the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Tote is the easy choice.
